Every year, people across the world use the new year as a new beginning. It can seem cliche, but what’s wrong with wanting to start over? Instead of new year, new me, I prefer new year, better me. It’s a time to reevaluate priorities and set goals intended for improvement. I’ve tried just about any standard resolution goal in my twenty-seven years, and with previous experience in mind, here are the top resolutions you need to try this year:

Focus on self-care.

This is something I recently discovered in 2018 and fully intend to make this a number one priority in the new year. Self-care can be so many things, from doing a face mask to meditating. Anything that makes you feel good or is good for you fall in this category and should be prioritized often. This year, make time to take care of your self. Make time to love yourself.

Leave toxic relationships behind you.

This might seem like a no-brainer but is often much harder than it sounds. I challenge you to really evaluate the relationships you have in your life. What value is each bringing you? If there is no value or the relationship is one-sided, reconsider the presence this person holds in your life. When everyone on your team isn’t pushing you to do better, its time to pick a new team.

I  can definitely admit that I am an avid Netflix binge watcher and as I look back at 2018, I did not finish reading a single book. I re-listened to “The Help” on audiobook but as far as reading an actual book… no luck. When I was younger, I couldn’t keep my head out of the books and I truly miss that. Reading is a way to let your imagination and creativity fly and it engages your mind. This year, read one book each month. Pick a book that truly interests you so that you will be motivated to get through it. You’ll feel great to spend less time watching TV and may surprise yourself by finding some amazing titles.

Drink more tea.

This one is definitely a challenge for me. I love tea, don’t get me wrong, but I LOVE coffee. I’ve done kicks before where I switch out coffee for tea, but always find my way back to the coffee. There are so many delicious teas out there, so there is a blend for everyone! Invest in a nice tea infuser bottle and drink tea. Often. Start your day off with a nice caffeinated blend, drink throughout the day and end off with chamomile. You’ll be surprised by the positive effects this could have on your body.

 Start a journal.

If you’ve never done this before, you are seriously missing out. Who better to talk to about your most private thoughts than yourself? Write truthfully. Write vulnerably. Write whatever it is that you need to process anything that may be going on in your life. I’ve always loved to journal, but never as regularly as I’d like. I always feel like I’ve taken a load off when I make a new entry. Especially the things I wouldn’t want to talk about with anyone. Use this as an outlet to work on yourself this year.
